Thomas wakes Grandma up in the middle of the night and writes on her palm that he wants to go get her magazines. She tells him to take a suitcase so he can bring her one of everything. She wants to remember this moment in detail because she's forgotten so many important details, like the last thing her father said to her.

Grandma packs a suitcase with the typewriter and paper and locks up the house. She watches Thomas at the airport. She doesn't know if she loves him, but she loves not being alone. She approaches him. He explains that Grandma makes him remember and confesses that Anna was pregnant. Grandma tells him she knew, and she's glad that he knew too. Ron has dinner with Oskar and his mom. Oskar asks Ron why he doesn't have a family, and Oskar's mom is horrified. Ron explains that his wife and daughter died in a car accident. He met Oskar's mom at a grief support group.

At midnight, Gerald, the limo driver, picks Oskar and Thomas up and drives them to the cemetery. When they get to the part of the bridge that's not in any borough, Oskar opens the sun roof and sticks his head out. He takes pictures of the stars.

The book 'Notes from the midnight driver' is about Alex Gregory a young boy and his best friend Laurie. In their journey together, they encounter many struggles and through their ventures, they learn many lessons. Throughout the book, the characters of this book have shown many signs of service. A service is an act of helping someone else either for your own benefit or theirs. Service shown by these characters turn out to be not selfish because most of their acts are done out of kindness and never thought about their own benefit.This book shows, acts of kindness done by the various characters introduced, like Alex's best friend Laurie and his Uncle Larry, who helped him and did not expect anything back. Also, when Laurie was told about Sol and how he treated Alex, she insisted on helping Alex deal with him by going with him to the elderly home on page 66-67. Laurie always made sure her best friend Alex was on the right path. Laurie was a really good influence in Alex's life after one stupid thing she didn't want him to do another, on page 65-68 Laurie created a plan to help Alex, she convinced Alex's mom that she would take Alex on a bus and come with him to the nursing home this would keep him out of trouble and help him out with getting extra hours in community service. Also when lecturing Alex she said 'Why didn't you call me on Friday night if you were planning on to do something so half-witted' this shows that Laurie would've tried to convince Alex out of his choice and try to tell him that it's wrong if he did call. Laurie is just a small girl who's not scared of anything. She helped her friend from the teasing of a high school jock and coming with him to deal with a grumpy elderly. She showed that she can help others by helping her friend Alex with his problems. Laurie is really attached to Alex, she acts like a moral compass for him, separating the wrong from the good. Laurie's decisions in the book always benefitted Alex in doing the right thing and always aimed towards keeping
